What ETHS offers the Community and Family History Classroom
•ETHS visits the classroom at least two, and probably three, times
—the 1st visit is an introduction to "doing" genealogy and to the types of materials used in genealogical reserach.
—the 2nd visit is a genealogy "blitz" with at least four ETHS staff members coming to the class to work with students one-on-one.
—a 3rd visit by ETHS staff will be made if students need assistance in completing their five generation charts and family group sheets
•If students complete their five generation charts (at least on one family line), ETHS staff will coordinate a visit to the East Tennessee History Center in order for students to do assisted research in the McClung Historical Collection.
This trip is only beneficial if students have traced their family tree to the early 1900s, therefore the requirement of completing at least one line back five generations.
What ETHS requires of the Community and Family History Classroom
The primary commitment ETHS seeks from the Community and Family History Classroom is that the classroom teacher incorporates an in-depth emphasis on family history research in their classroom curriculum. The level of success of the Community and Family History Classroom project comes directly from the degree of commitment from the Community and Family History Classroom teacher. ETHS staff is here to support teachers who want to undertake this incredible project. Call Lisa Oakley at 865-215-8828 or e-mail her at
if you are interested in discussing the possibilities.
