This institute opportunity is funded through a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment of the Humanities.
Teaching American History Website with Resources
The East Tennessee Historical Society is a project partner in the Teaching American History Grant: Tennessee River Valley Consortium (TRVC). TRVC includes school districts in Blount, Bradley, Loudon, McMinn, Monroe, and Polk counties. Institute Application Guidelines
The East Tennessee Historical Society will take applications for the Teachers History Institute after January of the institute year. The deadline will be April 15th of each year.
The Teachers Institute will provide:
· free registration
· all meals except breakfast
· free lodging at institute hotel/s--staying with the group during the week is required
· a modest stipend payable upon completion of the participant's eligibility requirements
To be eligible, applicants must be:
· an employed classroom teacher
· responsible for teaching social studies curriculum
· available to stay in residence the entire week
· able to commit to keeping a seminar journal and preparing and submitting one classroom lesson/unit plan
· able to commit to piloting the lesson/unit plan in the classroom
· able to commit to attend an evaluation seminar reviewing the lesson plans in late winter the following year

· letter stating why you would like to attend the institute and how it will benefit your teaching
· a letter of support from an administrator
