Driving Directions: On I-40 East and I-75 North

From I-40 East and I-75 North to the East Tennessee History Center
  • I-75 North and I-40 East merge west of Knoxville in Knox County. Proceed on I-40/75 eastward to the split with I-640.
  • At the I-40/I-640 interchange, contine eastbound on I-40 towards downtown Knoxville.
  • On I-40 East take Exit 388 (US 441/Henley St. exit). Keep right at fork in the ramp toward Knoxville Museum of Art/Western Avenue
  • Turn left onto WESTERN Avenue at traffic light
  • Western Avenue will become SUMMIT HILL Drive at next intersection, stay on Summit Hill. Turn right onto GAY St.
  • The East Tennessee History Center is located at the corner of GAY St. and CLINCH Ave. Our address is 601 S. GAY St and our entrance is directly across from the Tennessee Theatre. Parking is available at various nearby public parking lots and garages.

Driving Directions: On I-75 South

From I-75 South to the East Tennessee Historical Society:
  • Take I-75 South to I-275 (Knoxville).
  • Take the Asheville-I-40 East/Henley St.-US441 exit off of I-275.
  • Keep to the right at the fork in the ramp, in the Henley St. lane.
  • Keep to the right at the next fork in the ramp, towards WESTERN Ave. and Downtown.
  • Turn left onto WESTERN Avenue at traffic light.
  • Western Avenue will become SUMMIT HILL Drive at next intersection, stay on Summit Hill. Turn right onto GAY St.
  • The East Tennessee History Center is located at the corner of GAY St. and CLINCH Ave. Our address is 601 S. GAY St and our entrance is directly across from the Tennessee Theatre. Parking is available at various nearby public parking lots and garages.

Driving Directions: On I-40 West and I-81 South

From I-40 West and I-81 South to the East Tennessee Historical Society:
  • Travelers on I-81 South will proceed until I-81 terminates and becomes I-40 West.
  • Take I-40 West to Exit 388A (James White Parkway). Important note: Exit 388A is a left-hand lane exit.)
  • Take CUMBERLAND Ave. exit on James White Parkway to downtown.
  • Stay on Cumberland Ave. turn right onto GAY St.
  • The East Tennessee History Center is located at the corner of GAY St. and CLINCH Ave. Our address is 601 S. GAY St and our entrance is directly across from the Tennessee Theatre. Parking is available at various nearby public parking lots and garages.

Driving Directions: From McGhee Tyson Airport

From McGhee Tyson Airport to the East Tennessee Historical Society:
  • Travel north on US 129 (Alcoa Highway) approximately 12 miles to Interstate 40.
  • Merge onto I-40 East (towards Asheville/Lexington), travel approximately 1 mile east
  • Take Exit 388 (US 441/Henley St. exit). Keep right at fork in the ramp toward Knoxville Museum of Art/Western Avenue
  • Turn left onto WESTERN Avenue at traffic light
  • Western Avenue will become SUMMIT HILL Drive at next intersection, stay on Summit Hill. Turn right onto GAY St.
